Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain Lodge

Updated: Jan 2, 2021

Not far from the North Carolina border in the southern Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, Primland is a mountain retreat far from the many demands of daily life. While Primland is positioned miles away from the hustle and bustle, guests won't be lacking in comfort, activity or any extra creature comfort one could possibly imagine.

For many living in the southeastern portion of the US, driving through the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains is half the fun of transporting to this idyllic location. However, if a roadtrip isn't in the cards, the Roanoke, VA and Greensboro, NC airports are both a 1.5 hour drive from the resort and the international airport in Charlotte, NC is just over a 2 hour drive from Primland.

Upon arrival to the gates of Primland, guests drive up a winding mountain road setting the stage perfectly for what's to come. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for deer, black bears (I saw 3!), wild turkey and other wildlife. Just passed the deep woods, a beautiful clearing emerges and Primland resort makes a statement carved into the valley.

Within the resort there are several options for accommodation depending upon each guest's preferred experience. For couples looking for a romantic get-away, I suggest either staying in the Lodge close to the dining experiences and hotel amenities or in one of the Tree Houses for the ultimate in seclusion and privacy. Primland is also popular with families during school breaks or extended families in which case the Cottages and Mountain Homes provide great options for larger groups. The Lodge has just over 25 rooms and the Cottages are set in clusters throughout the property, so even at max capacity, Primland never feels crowded. (Mountain Homes are not part of Primland's luxury collection and enjoy different standards in decor and styling.)

Primland is a good distance from local towns, so dining on property is what most guests will choose. The most elegant restaurant is Elements with views overlooking the serene mountain valley. Delicious breakfasts are served here each morning (which is included in stays booked through Megan Winslett Travel) and in the evenings, I suggest enjoying cocktails on the huge back porch before moving inside for a gourmet meal. Inside the Lodge, guests can also enjoy the 19th Pub for lighter fare and traditional bar. During the summer season, Primland also provides the option to dine at the Stables Saloon which is an authentically, rustic buffet atmosphere giving an upscale farm presentation and is fun for the whole family.

In my opinion, the piece de resistance that Primland offers is the vast array of on-property activities guests can enjoy. During my stay, I enjoyed the full movie cinema inside the Lodge and indoor pool (great for inclement weather with the kids), incredible stargazing observatory, geo-caching, RTV trail riding and tree climbing! Additionally there is horseback riding, hunting instruction, spa, tomahawk throwing and the list goes on!
